According to a New York Daily News interview, when “Black Nativity” director Kasi Lemmons asked Angela Basset if she could sing, ” I told a little fib,” Angela confessed.
“Yes I can sing! You didn’t ask how well!”
Now the rest of us would have to bust out Amazing Grace ala Cece Winans to win the part, but when you’re Miss Bassett, your word is bond.
“I’ve never had to sing before — stage or screen,” she said. “I’ve always had to lip-synch,” says the Harlem -born actress who earned an Academy Award nomination playing Tina Turner in 1993’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.
Her co-star, Forest Whitaker also sings on screen for the first time in the film, though he revealed on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” that he studied opera at the University of Southern California.
The film, based on a play by Langston Hughes, opened in theaters this weekend.
