Finally, a conclusion (we hope) to the Donald Sterling scandal. The embattled Clippers owner will sell his Los Angeles NBA franchise to ex Microsoft exec Steve Ballmer for $2 billion. He will also drop his lawsuit against the league.
There have been rumors floating about Oprah attempting to organize a bid but it seems like the queen of talk is officially out of the running (if she was ever in fact in the running).
Sterling came under fire for a racist rant when TMZ leaked audio tapes of a phone conversation between the billionaire and his mistress, V. Stiviano. Sterling has done everything he could to deny being a racist, including praise and worship at a Black church, but the real estate mogul has a sordid past when it comes to racist practices and it all came to light in an explosive manner.
The resolution signals an end to the bizarre and offensive chain of events that culminated with Sterling’s wife, Shelly Sterling, having her husband declared mentally unfit and taking over control of the Clippers.
The NBA banned him for life, fined him $2.5 million and moved to strip him of his team ownership — actions Sterling protested in a billion-dollar antitrust lawsuit filed May 30 in Los Angeles.
